French photographer Romain Coudrier went to the Artic Circle in search of one of the greatest civilisations, the Vikings. He found a mix of vast nature and isolated spaces under the domination of mass consumption.

In 2023, Coudrier went in the Arctic Circle and discovered harsh landscapes ; in a “film noir” atmosphere, no more ready-made ideas of the picturesque red wooden house, the emerald Northern Lights... Immersion in raw nature, cradle of a great civilization: the Vikings. But – historians insist – they were as much merchants as warriors. A cynical nod to the present where, despite the miles traveled, in large and secluded spaces, mass consumption is omnipresent. As for the Norwegians, apart from a few tracks in the snow or fleeting encounters, they are almost absent, as if they had gone towards other horizons.

About Romain

Emerging photographer, Coudrier was born in Vienna, Austria in 1992. Today, he is based between Marseille and Paris. After five years as a media relations consultant in the Parisian communications sector, he turned away from this path to devote himself to photography, which he has been practising self-taught for 10 years. He remains attached to humans, their enigma, their solitude and to the depth of complex feelings. In 2024, his most recent work, « TMPC »  will be exhibited in a show at ‘Impulse' festival in Arles, France.
