In The Shadow We Bloom

“In The Shadow We Bloom" explores themes of isolation and anonymity within South Korea's urban landscapes. Capturing people, animals, and objects, the series juxtaposes curated social media personas with the impersonal nature of city life. Through this lens, photographer Aram Tanis examines the tension between self-representation and the reality of contemporary urban existence.

Born in one place and raised in another, the experience of standing out in a predominantly homogeneous environment shapes the exploration of themes such as “Isolation” and “Anonymity”. Through the lens, urban landscapes, people, animals, and mundane objects are captured, revealing the impersonal nature of contemporary urban surroundings and the detachment felt by those who inhabit them.

In The Shadow We Bloom, set against the backdrop of different South Korean cities, examines the use of the urban environment as a stage, where individuals craft images of themselves for social media consumption. This ongoing phenomenon is juxtaposed with images of the city itself, blending personal narratives with broader societal observations.

This exploration challenges the curated reality often presented on social media, offering a perspective that combines the personal with the universal, and in doing so, contrasts sharply with the polished images typically seen online.

“Examines the use of the urban environment as a stage, where individuals craft images of themselves for social media consumption.”
