At Night We Awaken

A phase of insomnia made photographer Dzesika Devic explore her surroundings during the night and she was surprised what she discovered. The busy places she knew from daytime appeared completely transformed. Fascinated by the uneasiness and awkward feelings, she started to document this ‘new world’ she uncovered.

I had a hard time sleeping for a while and because of this, I felt very hopeless. While I was staying up late at night, I was afraid of wasting my time. Driving through familiar places gave me a sense of productivity and freedom. Seeing familiar neighbourhoods at night though, was a completely different sensation than I had unexpected. Earlier in the day, these places had been budding with locals. At night they appeared to be completely abandoned. As if a person had not been there for a decade. It was strange, and it piqued my curiosity. It made me wonder who was there earlier that day, and what happened in these scenes. It seems to be an untold story in night scenes that don’t exist during the day. There is an uneasiness to the night that I feel particularly drawn to. So while everyone goes to sleep, I awaken, walking around and wondering.
