Beauty – Frontwoman

Eyeliner as iconography. In Frontwoman, shot in Barcelona’s El Gótico, beauty becomes attitude. This story explores eyeliner not just as makeup, but as a fashion statement—bold, lived-in and unapologetic. From ancient rituals to runway reinvention, the eyes take centre stage in a tribute to music, movement and aesthetic rebellion.

Have you heard of the Delboeuf illusion? It’s a visual perception trick I achieved using dark eyeliner around the lash line, it creates a contrast that makes the whites of the eyes appear larger. I created various looks for ZERO.NINE Magazine with pencils, gels, pens, eye paints, liquid liners and pigments.

Our Eyeliner Beauty Story was shot in El Gótico in Barcelona. The story mixes bold, dramatic lived-in eye lines with the lifestyle of a person whose passion for music and touring bands is romanticised but often lonely.

Eyeliner has origins tracing back to ancient cultures for cosmetic, religious and protective purposes. Today, eyeliner can be a cultural marker tied to the subcultures of film, fashion, TV and music. Actress Julia Fox often wears a goth beauty aesthetic. Yet true goths such as Robert Smith of The Cure and Siouxsie Sioux use black eyeliner for gender fluidity and nonconformity. Prince, Cardi B, Billie Eilish, K-Pop and FKA Twigs have also used various eyeliner styles to enhance their eyes.

Black eyeliner has dominated many runway looks, led by makeup artists Inge Grognard’s black extended from inner eye to ear eyeliner for Balenciaga to Pat McGrath’s various showgirl to regal creations for John Galliano and Maison Margiela. If you’re looking for inspiration from film and theatrical shows featuring strong black eyeliner, see Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Great Dictator, Suicide Squad, Nosferatu, The Rocky Horror Show and The Crow.

In Africa, the use of eyeliner, particularly Kohl, was prevalent in Egypt, think Cleopatra or King Tut wearing Kohl to enhance their beauty and holiness. The Middle East also has a long tradition of using Kohl for similar reasons, including desert sun protection of the eyes. Historically, the Emiratis made a natural Kohl for the eyes from ground date seeds.

Today in Asia, countries like India may use kajal as an evil eye protection on their babies or for ceremonial purposes. There is a wide range of eyeliners on the market today for all budgets, so go experiment.
