BEAUTY
Beauty – Realism
Realism beauty captures intricate details by creating a sense of intimacy for viewers and invites an appreciation of delicate hues or textures of makeup. Macro photography focuses on individual features while the story celebrates the raw beauty of unretouched skin, embracing imperfections as a testament to authenticity and honesty in makeup artistry.
Rouge One
A Bronze Age 3600-year-old red lipstick was recently discovered in the Jiroft region of Iran. The colour and texture were not too dissimilar from today’s lipstick’s combination of wax and pigments. This ancient cosmetic was found encased in a tube-like container.
Adorned
For our latest Beauty story, make-up artist Claudine Blythman explores the art of decorating your face and body with ornaments, gemstones and jewellery. This ancient ritual experiences a rebirth with the younger generation as a way to express individuality.
Visible
No Botox, no plastic surgery, no retiring. Models Bridget Sojourner (85) and Daphne Selfe (95) are redefining the ageing process, remaining visible with a positive perspective on life in our latest beauty story for ZERO.NINE. This is a reenergised take on characters from Christopher Isherwood’s Goodbye to Berlin.

Beauty: Grunge
Is Grunge make up considered ‘bad’ make up? Is it an antidote to beauty perfectionism? Julia Fox is the latest actor to claim her love of the so called ‘bad’ make up. For our Grunge beauty story, I was inspired by numerous punk artists from the late 80’s to 90’s third wave of feminism.
Efflorescence

GenZ jAGA
We collaborated with jAGA drinks for our beauty story about Gen Z, the social media generation who claim their online image is always at the back of their mind, with mental health being just as an important consideration as their physical health.
Beauty: PRIDE
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pride in London, our Beauty Editor Claudine Blythman created eight looks, inspired by the original Pride flag designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978. Each of the eight colours has a meaning and is dedicated to a prominent figure from the global LGBTQ+ community. For all eight looks we have asked queer model Jabari King to pose for us.
Celestial Beauty
Inspired by the Crab Nebula, a Supernova (star explosion) which took place in 1054 A.D., Claudine Blythman created a Beauty story, combining out-of-this-world eye make-up with original NASA imagery.
Blitz Afro New Romantics
Blitz Kids and New Romantics were movements with origins in the UK Punk scene, fabulously fabled night clubs in 1980’s London filled with cutting edge kids, art school students and celebrities wearing their most outlandish gender fluid outfits during a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain.
Antonio’s People
Antonio Lopez is still one of the most inspiring fashion illustrators today. The fun and beautiful way he documented his life and friendships with his Instamatic camera is the inspiration for this beauty shoot.
Beauty: Cyberpunk
The cultural movement of Cyberpunk has emerged into film, fashion and music. With its dystopian setting, it has seen a significant resurgence recently from the catwalks of Balenciaga and Valentino to Grimes and A$AP Rocky providing soundtrack for the video game Cyberpunk 2077.
