Beauty: Grunge

Is Grunge make up considered ‘bad’ make up? Is it an antidote to beauty perfectionism? Julia Fox is the latest actor to claim her love of the so called ‘bad’ make up. For our Grunge beauty story, I was inspired by numerous punk artists from the late 80’s to 90’s third wave of feminism.

I studied the grungey make up of these idiosyncratic front women from Tina Bell of Bam Bam, Brody Dalle of The Distillers, Dorlores O’Riordan of The Cranberries, Courtney Love from Hole, Skin of Skunk Anansie, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey and Bikini Kill.

“To create a Grunge look, I had to go against my instincts to perfect and blend.”

To summarise, Grunge is the person with the smudged lipstick from screaming into a microphone with a film of shiny skin from a slept in look. Black kohl lined eyes, heavily applied, that’s sweated and smeared onstage or in the mosh pit, with black eye gunk and clumpy mascara. To create a Grunge look, I had to go against my instincts to perfect and blend. I performed a process of adding and removing make up, layering oils, glosses, brush strokes, when smeared and smudged.
