Campo de batalla (Battlefield)

In every city, there’s a tension between the urban environment and nature. But can we even talk about ‘nature’ in big cities? For photographer Itsaso Arizkuren, the combination of city and nature represents a battlefield. Through her photographs she explores how we portray and experience nature in metropolitan environments, and who has the upper hand.

Campo de batalla (Battlefield) is about the confrontation between nature and city. Through photography I have explored the relationship between these two opposites in an urban environment, where their coexistence sometimes becomes both curious and hostile. Big cities try to maintain a minimum of green, of nature, but inevitably the urban ends up prioritising everything else. In the city, where everything is controlled by man, one cannot speak of nature. It will always be somehow impostured, uncomfortable and out of place. The simple fact that nature and the urban co-inhabit has an unreal point.
