Another Realm

Our beliefs and truths of our existence shift depending on the place where we are at. Photographer William Joshua Templeton uses free-diving in the ocean to reconnect with nature and creates stunning underwater imagery.

Shot in the ocean waters surrounding the Canary Islands, in late 2022, the series explores humans’ connection to nature through the lens of free-diving.

Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman taught us that framing a belief or ‘truth’ can undermine or enforce its validity. On land, the scenery frames our existence, our sense of self, who we are and what we can achieve. Our truth. Below water, the framing changes, our mental and physical vulnerabilities are tested. The experience, if endured for long enough, leads to new truths where the industrialised eye can once again see nature as a teacher, asking us to reflect on whether we're the ‘pinnacle of evolution’ or the ones with the least experience and the most to learn.

About William

William's work investigates connection, the environment and our place within it. Always seeking to unveil a new truth or perspective on the subject of focus.

His documentary style is considered, soft, often sombre. Think muted blacks and rich colours, images reduced to their raw fundamentals, with a focus on the positive elements. His personal work concerns the environment, seeking to use visual arts as a force for good:

"I am drawn to explore our place in the balanced environment of the world. Despite our efforts, nature cannot be dominated. If we could let go of our fear of scarcity, we might realise that we are nature and not separate from it”

His business pledges 1% for the planet, supports the Rivers Trust and the IRC.
