Haar
Artist and hairstylist, Birte Klintworth take up the implied challenge of creating camera-less images, offering an alternative, experimental, radical and revelatory form of vision. Abandoning the camera at the outset in favour of a more direct and readily metaphorical rendering of the photographic phenomena.

The Falling Sky
Swiss artist and photographer Olivia Wünsche had a long interests in indigenous worldviews, environmental and humanitarian crisis. She decided to travel to Peru to work with a local NGO. She witnessed first hand what she only new from research: indigenous people are still being subjected to colonial exploitation, but now camouflaged as corporate policies. But she also found forceful resistance and a spirit to fight back by the local community which inspired her to create this series of images, collages and digital paintings.

The borders of Poland
For his latest series, photographer Tommy Sussex travelled to Poland to investigate and document the impact the Russian invasion had on the communities of the borderlands. His carefully selected subjects and deftly composed images visualise the tension of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and the territorial battle.

Drive-by shootings
We spoke to legendary street photographer David Bradford about quitting his job in an ad agency to become a taxi driver in New York in the 90s. During that time, he created an incredible body of work of iconic scenes of the city – all captured from inside his taxi.

The Last Few
In her series ‘The Last Few’, photographer Sarah Louise Ramsay documents the lives of Havana’s last remaining Balseros float tube fishing community. With nothing more than the inner tubes from truck tires, they head out to the open sea early in the morning to provide for their families.

BLACK VENUS at Somerset House
Opening July 20th until September 24th, Somerset House is proud to present BLACK VENUS, an exhibition which examines the historical representation and shifting legacy of Black women in visual culture. Curated by Aindrea Emelife, BLACK VENUS brings together the work of over 18 Black women and non-binary artists to explore the othering, fetishisation and reclamation of narratives around Black femininity.

La Carne dell’Orso (Bear Meat)
With his project Bear Meat, photographer Carlo Lombardi provides a point of view on the fragile relationship between human beings and nature. Using a combination of contemporary photographs and historical images, he investigates the conservation efforts to protect the Marsican brown bear in the Apennine mountains.

Menos Pausa
Photographer Ana Leal explores the physical and psychological landscape that women’s bodies are exposed to during menopause. She uses photographic techniques to create a visual essay proposing metaphors of fertility, ageing and physical decline.

Manifest
With a background in painting and drawing, visual artist Jorg Karg creates stunning digital photographic collages and objects. His unique approach and mesmerising style has gained him a lot of recognition over the years. His photo book Manifest is available now.

Waterland – On how to become a body of water
According to legend, a creature half-human and half-water life was stranded in the Netherlands in the 15th century – this creature embodied both the sea and humans. With her work Waterland, Dutch artist Sophie Allerding adopts the position of this mermaid. What would she think of climate change and rising sea levels – a problem which has become very serious in recent years in the Netherlands.

Les fleurs
What is beauty and how do we define it? For visual artist Alina Gross, the perception and idea of beauty is completely distorted and unrealistic. With her series ‘Les fleurs’, she combines body painting with flowers and close-ups of naked female bodies to create a sensual expression of what beauty means to her.

Tormenta
Photographer Flávio Edreira uses photography as therapy to deal with his ADHD and to better understand his internal conflicts. Tormenta (English: Storm) represents the lack of control he feels, the nightmares he is submerged in and his paralysing fear of everything tumbling into utter chaos.

Between past and future
Aleksandra Bardas’s project is dedicated to refugees from Ukraine who were forced to flee the war and who are living in Hamburg now. They are caught between the past and the future. They live with thoughts and hopes to return to their homeland someday. Each story is unique and is a testament to how everything happened from within.

The Sum of Us
Photographer Gregg Segal combines abstract images of textures found in the streets with old family photos to create multi-layered images trying to understand his complex family history. What initially started as a way to understand his brother’s mental health issues quickly developed into something much deeper and more meaningful.

Permanent wound
Female genital mutilation (FGM) was officially criminalised in Egypt back in 2008 – nonetheless it is still considered one of the most important religious rituals to this day. With Permanent Wound, photographer Somaya Abdelrahman documents her own personal journey and the violence and pain thousands of women experience every year.
